The short answer: for plumbers, the AI receptionists worth comparing in 2026 split four ways. Per-call AI tools (Smith.ai's AI tier) bill by usage. Flat-rate AI (NextPhone) costs the same in a quiet month and a freeze week. Trades-focused tools with native ServiceTitan connections (Avoca, Sameday) cost more or quote privately. Live and hybrid services (PATLive, Abby, Smith.ai's receptionists) put a person on the call at a per-minute or per-call price. Every price below was read on the vendor's own pricing page on October 5, 2026.
We make NextPhone, one of the 6, so its row sits in alphabetical order with the same columns as everyone else. What matters for a plumbing company is not the entry price. It is what a freeze week costs, whether a burst-pipe call reaches your on-call plumber, and whether the job lands in ServiceTitan, Housecall Pro, or Jobber without anyone retyping it.
A sample home-services emergency (a leaking water heater): the AI takes the address and connects the caller to the technician on call.

Prices, emergency wording and integration status read on each vendor's own website on October 5, 2026. "Native" and "Direct" are the vendor's own description of the connection. "Listed, type not stated" means the vendor's site names the tool without saying how it connects; "Not stated" means the pages we read do not mention it. NextPhone's direct Jobber connection and its Zapier connections are on the $299 Growth plan.
What a freeze week costs: price your worst month
A cold snap is when plumbing phones melt down: burst pipes, frozen lines, no water, all at once and mostly at night. Per-minute and per-call pricing charges you most in exactly that week. Here is each tool at a normal month (100 calls) and a freeze month (300 calls), with 3-minute calls.
| Tool | 100 calls/month (300 min) | 300 calls/month (900 min) |
|---|---|---|
| Abby Connect (all calls answered by a person) | $898.50 | $2,484 |
| Abby Connect (all calls answered by AI) | $493.50 | $1,347.75 |
| Avoca | Not published | Not published |
| NextPhone | $199 | $199 |
| PATLive | $479 | $1,475 |
| Sameday | $449 | $789 |
| Smith.ai AI Receptionist | $212.50 | $500 |
| Smith.ai live receptionists | $915 | $2,100 |
Cheapest published plan plus published overage that covers the volume. Abby's overage uses the plan's per-minute rate. Sameday publishes no overage rate, so 900 minutes uses its 1,000-minute plan. Prices read October 5, 2026 on: abby.com/pricing, patlive.com/pricing, sameday.ai/pricing, smith.ai/pricing/ai-receptionist, smith.ai/pricing/receptionists.
One thing stands out: the live services roughly triple when volume triples, which is the bill that lands after the first hard freeze. Whatever you pick, ask the vendor one question: "What does my bill look like in my busiest month?"
What to look for in a plumbing AI receptionist
Start from what an unanswered call costs. Invoca's research puts the missed-call rate for home services businesses at 27%, and in CallRail's 2025 small business report, 85% of people said they won't call back when a call goes unanswered. Every tool below closes that gap; they differ on the five points that follow.
Emergency triage that ends in a person. A burst pipe at 2 AM needs a live transfer to whoever is on call, with the address and whether the water is shut off, not a message read at 7 AM. Ask the vendor to demo exactly that call.
Shut-off guidance before the transfer. The best setups ask "Is the main shut off?" and tell the caller where to find it while the transfer connects. Make it one of your screening questions.
The job in your software. "Integrates with ServiceTitan" ranges from a certified app that books onto the board to an email you retype. Ask what record gets created (customer, job, request, or just a note) and whether it needs Zapier.
Freeze-week capacity. Ten callers at once during a cold snap should all get an answer, not a busy signal.
A bill you can predict. Per-minute, per-call, per-caller, and flat pricing all look similar at 50 calls and very different at 300.
The 6 tools, briefly
Abby Connect
A receptionist service where live staff and AI share the calls, billed on minute bundles in which an AI-answered minute counts as half. Its own site lists native ServiceTitan, Housecall Pro and Jobber integrations and says emergencies go to your on-call contact per your escalation list. Consider it if you want a person on most calls and need all three FSM tools. Watch for the freeze-month bill: at 300 calls answered by people, the published plans come to $2,484.
Avoca
An AI receptionist built for home services, with a certified ServiceTitan app and direct Housecall Pro and Jobber booking, per its own site. It publishes no prices; you go through a demo. Consider it if you run a larger ServiceTitan shop and want calls booked straight onto the board. Watch for price you only learn on a sales call.
NextPhone
Our product. An AI receptionist on flat monthly plans from $199 with unlimited calls, so a freeze week costs what a quiet month does. It transfers emergencies to your on-call number by the rules you write, either straight through or with a spoken summary first, and can alert you by text or email when a transfer with a spoken summary is not answered. It books routine work live on Google Calendar, Outlook, Calendly, Cal.com, Acuity, or OnceHub, or texts the caller a booking link. Every call lands in Jobber as a client and a request with the summary attached, and ServiceTitan and Housecall Pro get the call details through Zapier, both on the $299 Growth plan. Watch for: it is AI-only, so if you want a human voice on every call, a live service fits better. More on our plumbing answering service.
PATLive
A long-running live answering service with US-based receptionists, billed per minute. Its pricing page includes call transfers and emergency dispatch on every plan, and its home-services page lists integrations with Jobber and ServiceTitan without saying how they connect; the pages we read do not mention Housecall Pro. Consider it if you want a person answering after hours at low volume. Watch for per-minute overage in a freeze week ($1,475 at 300 calls on published plans).
Sameday
An AI receptionist aimed at home services, with an official ServiceTitan technology partnership, direct Jobber booking, and, per its own site, jobs booked directly into your Housecall Pro schedule, from $449 a month for 500 minutes. Its homepage shows a nights-and-weekends emergency line; overage rates are not published. Consider it if you run ServiceTitan and want an AI that works inside it. Watch for the entry price and unpublished overage.
Smith.ai
Two products: an AI receptionist billed per call (free for 25 calls, then from $150 for 75) and live North American receptionists (from $300 for 30 calls). Its home-services page says urgent calls reach on-call technicians based on your escalation rules. Native ServiceTitan and Jobber connections are listed for the live receptionist product; Housecall Pro for both. Consider it if you want AI now with the option of live agents. Watch for per-call charges stacking up in busy weeks.
