Prices read from each vendor's own pricing page on October 5, 2026. Every cost assumes calls average 3 minutes and uses the cheapest published plan for that volume.
Ruby alternatives, short answer: for people on the phone at a lower bill, look at Go Answer, Posh, PATLive or Moneypenny. If your calls run long, NextPhone charges nothing extra for length, and Smith.ai bills per call if you need people. If AI answering works for you, Smith.ai's free tier covers 25 calls, RingCentral AI Receptionist is the cheapest at 50 calls, and NextPhone is the cheapest once you pass about 133 calls a month. Every one with a published price at that volume costs less than Ruby.
Disclosure: NextPhone is our product. It gets the same columns and the same arithmetic as every other row, and it does not win every row.
What does Ruby cost?
Ruby publishes four plans, all per receptionist minute (source: ruby.com/plans-and-pricing, read October 5, 2026):
| Plan | Monthly | Per minute |
|---|---|---|
| 50 minutes | $250 | $5.00 |
| 100 minutes | $395 | $3.95 |
| 200 minutes | $720 | $3.60 |
| 500 minutes | $1,725 | $3.45 |
Setup, after-hours, weekend and bilingual answering are included, and every one of those minutes comes out of the same allowance. Ruby does not publish what a minute costs once the allowance runs out.
At three-minute calls, 25 calls a month needs the 100-minute plan ($395), 50 calls needs the 200-minute plan ($720), and 100 calls needs the 500-minute plan ($1,725).
What do the 11 alternatives cost at the same volume?
| Service | Type | Entry plan | 25 calls/mo | 50 calls/mo | 100 calls/mo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ruby (benchmark) | Live | $250/month (50 minutes) | $395 | $720 | $1,725 |
| Go Answer | Live | $175/month (100 minutes) | $175 | $262.50 | $345 |
| PATLive | Live | $49/month (pay per use at $2.99/min) | $156.25 | $293.50 | $479 |
| Posh | Live | $65/month (pay per use at $2.30/min) | $185 | $322.50 | $630 |
| Moneypenny (same table as VoiceNation) | Live | $165/month (50 minutes) | $222 | $371 | $613 |
| Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists | Live, per call | $300/month (30 calls) | $300 | $530 | $915 |
| Abby Connect | Human + AI | $165/month (50 minutes) | $247.50 | $493.50 | $899 |
| RingCentral AI Receptionist | AI | $49/month (100 minutes) | $49 | $74 | $149 |
| Moneypenny AI (same table as VoiceNation AI) | AI | $69/month (25 calls) | $69 | $99 | $199 |
| My AI Front Desk | AI | $99/month (200 minutes) | $99 | $99 | not computable from the published price |
| Smith.ai AI Receptionist | AI, per call | $150/month (75 calls) | $0 | $75 | $212.50 |
| NextPhone | AI, flat | $199/month (unlimited inbound calls) | $199 | $199 | $199 |
"Not computable" means the vendor does not publish an overage rate for usage past the plan. Totals are our arithmetic on each vendor's published plans.
Where the lines cross (at three-minute calls):
- Against live answering services, NextPhone costs less past about 40 calls a month. Against Ruby and Smith.ai's live receptionists, it costs less at every volume in the table.
- Against other AI receptionists, the per-call and per-minute plans cost less below about 95 calls (Smith.ai AI), 100 calls (Moneypenny AI) and 133 calls (RingCentral AI Receptionist).
- Past about 133 calls a month, NextPhone is the cheapest service in this table, and its price does not change after that.

What does each one give up compared with Ruby?
Go Answer. The cheapest per minute of the live services here: $175/month (100 minutes), with overage billed per second. Bilingual and legal-intake receptionists cost extra per minute, where Ruby includes bilingual answering.
PATLive. Pay-per-use from $49 a month at $2.99 a minute, so a quiet month stays cheap. Larger plans run up to 5,000 minutes.
Posh. Pay-per-use from $65 a month at $2.30 a minute, with bundles from 50 minutes, and a lower minute price than Ruby on every plan size in the table.
Moneypenny. $165/month (50 minutes), with the same plan table VoiceNation publishes. Priced per minute like Ruby, at a lower rate.
Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists. Bills per call, not per minute: $300/month (30 calls), then $11.50 a call on the base tier. That helps when calls run long (intake, scheduling) and hurts when most calls are 30-second questions. Spam calls are not billed when caller ID is passed.
Abby Connect. $165/month (50 minutes). Each call is answered by a person or by AI, and an AI minute uses half an "Abby Minute". It sells on a dedicated receptionist team that learns your callers, which is the closest match to Ruby's service model.
RingCentral AI Receptionist. $49/month (100 minutes), then $0.50 a minute, billed in 30-second increments rounded up. Also sold as a $39 add-on to RingCentral phone plans. The cheapest AI option here at low volume.
Moneypenny AI. Per call: $69/month (25 calls), up to 250 calls for $435. Cheap at low volume; the bill rises with every call.
My AI Front Desk. $99/month (200 minutes). Good value under about 65 three-minute calls a month. Past the 200 minutes the page publishes no overage rate.
Smith.ai AI Receptionist. A free tier for 25 calls, then Pro at $150 for 75 calls ($2.00 a call), with $1.80 and $1.67 per call on larger plans. Calls can be handed to a live Smith.ai receptionist.
NextPhone. $199/month (unlimited inbound calls). The AI picks up in under 2 seconds, answers in 14 languages (up to 3 active per line), takes intake, books, and transfers calls that need you. It is not the cheapest at 25 or 50 calls: RingCentral, Moneypenny AI and My AI Front Desk cost less there. It matches Moneypenny AI at 100 calls, and past about 133 calls a month it is the cheapest AI option on this list, at the same price at 150, 300 or 500 calls. CRM sync starts on the $299 Growth plan.
