Ruby Receptionist Pricing (2026): What Ruby's Plans Really Bill

Key Takeaways

  • •NextPhone is from $199/month, flat, with unlimited inbound calls. Ruby bills per minute, so at three minutes a call the same service costs $485 at 40 calls and $1,160 at 100 calls.
  • •Ruby plans run from $250/month (50 minutes) to $1,725/month for 500 minutes on its pricing page. Overage is $3.65 to $5.40 a minute on plans up to 1,000 minutes, and the rates are in its help center, not on the pricing page.
  • •Ruby says a typical call uses about 2 receptionist minutes. At that length 100 calls fit the 200-minute plan at $720. At 3 minutes the same 100 calls cost $1,160, so your real average decides the bill.
  • •Ruby rounds every call up to the next 60 seconds and counts hold time and after-call work. Paying by credit card adds 3%.
  • •An upgrade applies to the current billing period and at least the next two, so answering one busy month with a bigger plan costs three months at the higher price.
  • •Stay with Ruby if your callers expect a person on every call and the bill is worth it to you. NextPhone answers with AI and transfers to your team.

Ruby Receptionist Pricing (2026): What Ruby's Plans Really Bill

NextPhone AI Receptionist

Answer every call, book appointments, 24/7.

Ruby receptionist pricing starts at $250/month (50 minutes) and runs to $1,725/month for 500 minutes on its pricing page, with $720/month for 200 minutes labelled most popular. Minutes past the plan cost $3.65 to $5.40 a minute, a rate Ruby lists in its help center and not on its pricing page.

In practice that means about $395 to $485 a month at 40 calls, and $720 to $1,160 at 100 calls, depending on how many minutes each call really uses. NextPhone is an AI receptionist from $199/month, flat, with unlimited inbound calls.

Disclosure: NextPhone is our product. Method: we read Ruby's pricing page, help center and terms on November 4, 2026, and the plan prices here match them. We have not tested Ruby's service, placed calls to it or seen a customer's invoice. Everything below is arithmetic on published numbers, and you can redo it with your own.

Ruby pricing, plan by plan

Ruby 350$1,210/month for 350 minutes$4.25 a minute312 to 471 minutes
Ruby 500$1,725/month for 500 minutes$4.00 a minute472 to 706 minutes

Ruby's pricing page (ruby.com/plans-and-pricing) shows the 50, 100, 200 and 500 plans and no overage rate. The 350 plan, the overage rates and the suggested ranges come from its help center article "Am I on the right billing plan?", read November 4, 2026. That article also lists plans up to 2,500 minutes at $7,875 a month.

Ruby's plans and pricing page, November 2026: 50 minutes at $250, 100 at $395, 200 at $720 and 500 at $1,725 a month

Two things in that table are easy to miss.

A minute past the allowance costs more than a minute inside it. On the 200-minute plan, an included minute works out to $3.60, and an extra one costs $4.40 a minute.

The suggested ranges run well past the allowance. Ruby suggests its 200-minute plan up to 311 minutes, because that is where the next plan gets cheaper. At 311 minutes, the bill is $720 plus 111 extra minutes, or $1,208.40. So the most popular plan is really a $720 to $1,208 plan.

Ruby deserves credit here. Every plan has the same features, and the page says there is no extra charge for nights, weekends or holidays. Scheduling, intake and payment collection are all listed as included. Spanish and bilingual handling is listed too, though Ruby's FAQ gives both 24/7 and weekday hours for it, so confirm what you would get.

How many calls does each Ruby plan cover?

Ruby's help center says a typical inbound call results in about 2 receptionist minutes (article dated April 10, 2026). Our Price Index uses 3 minutes for every vendor. Here is what each assumption gives you:

Ruby 20010066
Ruby 350175116
Ruby 500250166

Neither number is yours. To get yours, divide the minutes on your last Ruby invoice by the number of calls. Intake calls with several questions will sit above 2 minutes, and a line that mostly takes messages may sit close to it.

Chart of Ruby's monthly bill at 2 and 3 billed minutes a call. At 250 calls it runs $1,725 to $2,550, against NextPhone Pro flat at $199

Here is the same month written out at both call lengths.

40 calls a month

A solo attorney or a small contractor.

  • NextPhone Pro: $199. Calls and minutes are not counted.
  • Ruby at 2 minutes a call: 40 x 2 = 80 minutes. The 50-minute plan plus 30 extra minutes at $5.40 a minute would be $412, so $395/month for 100 minutes is cheaper. Total: $395.
  • Ruby at 3 minutes a call: 40 x 3 = 120 minutes. The same plan plus 20 extra minutes at $4.50 a minute adds $90. Total: $485.

100 calls a month

A small firm or a busy service company.

  • NextPhone Pro: $199.
  • Ruby at 2 minutes a call: 100 x 2 = 200 minutes. $720/month for 200 minutes covers it with nothing to spare. Total: $720.
  • Ruby at 3 minutes a call: 100 x 3 = 300 minutes. The same plan plus 100 extra minutes at $4.40 a minute adds $440. Total: $1,160, just under $1,210/month for 350 minutes, the next plan up.

At 3 minutes a call, the difference is $961 a month, or $11,532 a year, against NextPhone Pro.

180 calls a month

Several staff, or a business running ads.

  • NextPhone Pro: $199.
  • Ruby at 2 minutes a call: 360 minutes. $1,210/month for 350 minutes plus 10 extra minutes at $4.25 a minute. Total: $1,252.50.
  • Ruby at 3 minutes a call: 540 minutes. $1,725/month for 500 minutes plus 40 extra minutes at $4.00 a minute. Total: $1,885.

The busy month, and why upgrading can cost more

Say you run 65 calls a month at 3 minutes, which is 195 minutes on $720/month for 200 minutes. Then a storm, a tax deadline or a campaign that works brings 150 calls, or 450 minutes. Here is what each route costs over three months:

  • NextPhone Pro: 3 x $199 = $597.
  • Stay on the Ruby plan and pay overage: 250 extra minutes at $4.40 a minute adds $1,100, so the busy month costs $1,820. Over three months: $1,820 + $720 + $720 = $3,260.
  • Upgrade to the Ruby 500-minute plan: Ruby's terms say an upgrade applies to the current billing period and at least the next two. That is 3 x $1,725 = $5,175.

So for a one-month spike, the cheaper move on Ruby is usually to stay put and pay the overage. Ruby will not move you up on its own, and it emails you at 85% and 100% of your minutes. New customers get a 90-day calibration window where plan changes can go either way at any time. After that, a downgrade needs three consecutive billing periods on the plan you are leaving.

Ruby's terms (ruby.com/terms) and help center, read November 4, 2026.

Rounding. Ruby's help center puts it plainly: a ten-second call bills as 60 seconds. A wrong number on the 200-minute plan, once you are past the allowance, costs a full minute of overage. Rounding up also adds about 30 seconds to an average call if call lengths fall evenly, though Ruby's 2-minute figure may already include that.

Hold and after-call work. Ruby's terms count the time a caller is on hold and the time a receptionist spends finishing your call details after the caller hangs up. Talk time after the call is transferred to you is not billed, which is fair. The cost scales quickly: 30 extra seconds on each of 100 calls is 50 minutes, or $220 at the 200-minute plan's overage rate.

Spam. Ruby's robocall filter is free and filtered calls are not billed, but it is opt-in. If you stay with Ruby, ask for it to be turned on. Its help page excludes only filtered calls from your minutes, so a solicitor who reaches a receptionist probably counts.

Card surcharge. Credit cards add 3%, and debit, ACH and checks do not. On $1,160 that is $34.80 a month. If you stay, switching to ACH is the easiest saving on this page.

No rollover. A quiet month's unused minutes expire. On the 200-minute plan, a 120-minute month still costs $720.

Contract. The contract is 30 days and renews automatically. You can cancel before the next invoice date, and the cancellation takes effect at the end of that billing period. There is no annual lock-in, and that deserves credit too.

Discounts. Ruby mentions state and local bar association discounts but publishes no percentage, and its help center says discounts cannot be combined. Ask for the figure in writing, then rerun the numbers above.

What the flat alternative covers

NextPhone pricing page showing Pro at $199, Growth at $299 and Scale at $599 a month, flat, with unlimited inbound calls

For a business already paying a per-minute service, what we offer is the same coverage at a fraction of the cost. NextPhone answers in under 2 seconds, day and night, takes your intake questions, books into Google or Outlook calendars, and handles several calls at once. Callers who ask for a person are transferred to your team. If nobody picks up, you get the message and their number in seconds. Every call comes with a recording, a transcript and a summary.

The named comparison: against Ruby's $720/month for 200 minutes, NextPhone Pro at $199 is $521 a month less, or $6,252 a year.

CRM updates after each call, including Clio, start on the $299 Growth plan, which also includes done-for-you setup. Against the same Ruby plan, Growth is $421 a month less.

NextPhone has answered 2M+ calls for 7,000+ businesses in 45+ states, and is rated 5.0 on G2 and 4.8 on Capterra (reviews). We have not run a side-by-side call test against Ruby, so the fair test is your own calls.

How to decide in ten minutes

Pull your last three Ruby invoices and write down the minutes, the call count, the plan, the overage and any card surcharge. Then use the highest month, not the average.

  • Choose NextPhone if that month ran well above $199, your calls run long, your volume swings with the season, or you are tired of watching a meter.
  • Keep Ruby if a live person on every call is part of what you sell, and the bill for your busiest month still makes sense to you.
  • Test first if you are unsure. Forward after-hours or overflow calls to the 7-day trial while Ruby keeps your main hours, and compare the transcripts. Keep Ruby running until you have seen enough calls.

If you do switch, the order matters. Start any port-out while the Ruby account is open and in good standing, then cancel before the next invoice date. Our guide to switching answering services covers the steps, and the flat-rate pricing page explains how the bill works.

If you want the live options too, our Ruby alternatives post prices 11 of them. The same kind of bill is written out in our PATLive pricing and Smith.ai pricing posts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Ruby cost per month?

Ruby's pricing page lists $250/month for 50 minutes, $395/month for 100 minutes, $720/month for 200 minutes and $1,725/month for 500 minutes. Real bills depend on call length. At 100 calls a month, Ruby costs $720 at 2 minutes a call and $1,160 at 3 minutes. NextPhone is from $199/month, flat, with unlimited inbound calls.

What is Ruby's overage rate?

Ruby's help center lists $5.40 a minute on the 50-minute plan, $4.50 a minute on the 100-minute plan, $4.40 a minute on the 200-minute plan and $4.00 a minute on the 500-minute plan. Each is higher than that plan's included rate. Ruby's pricing page does not show them.

Does Ruby charge for hold time?

Yes. Ruby's terms count hold time and the time a receptionist spends completing call details after the caller hangs up. Talk time after a call is transferred to you or to voicemail is not billed. Each call is rounded up to the next 60 seconds.

Does Ruby charge for spam calls?

Robocalls caught by Ruby's filter are not billed, but the filter is opt-in, so you have to ask for it. Its help page excludes only filtered calls from your minutes, so a solicitor who reaches a live receptionist likely counts. NextPhone has no per-call or per-minute charge, so spam never changes the bill.

Does Ruby have a contract or a free trial?

Ruby's contract is 30 days and renews automatically, and you can cancel before the next invoice date. There is no free trial on the pricing page. New customers get a money-back guarantee within 21 days of signing up, or until usage passes 500 minutes, whichever comes first.

Can I keep my number if I leave Ruby?

Yes, if you port it out while your account is in good standing. A number Ruby assigned must be more than 21 days old, and Ruby can release numbers not ported within three months of termination. If you only forward your own number to Ruby, you can point the forwarding somewhere else.

Is there a flat-rate alternative to Ruby?

NextPhone is from $199/month, flat, with unlimited inbound calls and no overage, and CRM sync starts on the $299 Growth plan. It answers with AI, not live receptionists, and transfers callers who ask for a person to your team. There is a 7-day free trial, and a card is needed at signup.

The bottom line

Ruby's pricing is more open than most: the plans are public, the features are the same on every plan and the terms spell out what counts as a minute. The catch is that the number on the pricing page is the floor. Your bill is set by your busiest month, your average call length and how you pay.

If that bill has grown past what the phone is worth to you, compare it with NextPhone's plans, from $199/month, flat. If a live person on every call is what your clients pay you for, Ruby is built for that, and the tips above can still lower your bill.
